Canoe & Kayak Magazine and Porn?

Hello everyone! Regular Durhamblogger readers may know that I've taken Canoe & Kayak Magazine to task (twice) for running photos / ads that depict unsafe paddling practices:Shame on Canoe & Kayak Magazine - No PFDs! and Shame on Visit Florida.com - No PFDs Both times, I fired off letters to their editor and received no response from them. But, maybe the third time is the charm?

Case in point. Canoe & Kayak published the above adult products & DVD ad in their May 2012 issue. I censored it here since it was "too much" for my blog! It was a big ad... measuring 3 x 11 inches... opposite a feature story titled Ellesmere. Several (many?) Canoe & Kayak readers, did not take too kindly to having adult product ads in their paddling magazine, and wrote to the editors. This time, Canoe & Kayak editors responded with this quote that appeared in the Letters to the Editor section (June 2012 issue).

The ad placement was indeed a miscommunication - it was part of a 'group buy' which wasn't handled by our regular sales team, and the artwork arrived late. We simply didn't notice until it was too late. "I can tell you, once we realized what we had done, we were absolutely horrified," says Publisher Jim Marsh. It is a clear mistake, and as Publisher, my responsibility."

I guess assuming "responsibility" is the "same" as offering an "apology" to Canoe & Kayak readers?

In any event, we now know that while Canoe & Kayak editors will not respond to safety issues in their photos / ads... they do respond to complaints about porn and adult product ad placements.

Now, what happens if they publish a photo / ad that shows an individual not wearing a PFD while paddling, AND selling adult products? It's anyone's guess?

  1. Gee. No wonder I never buy that magazine and never will. It's obvious they have no clue what they're doing! Thanks for keeping us informed on assaults to our precious sport!

  2. I am done with Canoe & Kayak Magazine too. It is bad enough they will not address paddling safety issues in their photos / ads, but now to let porn and an adult products ad "slip" by their editing staff, is grossly irresponsible. And than, not to have the intestinal fortitude to even offer an apology to their readers, speaks volumes? I don't need to be sending them my money.
